Thank you so much for this video. My dad’s been trying to get me to major in computer science because I took one website development class in high school and did well. That class was a JOKE. anyway, I want to major in psychology but my dad thinks more money will come majoring in something else. But thank you so much for being in my corner.

Ooooh, you in the house today. My parents are on my case right now just like that. I’m a Social Science major myself. I’m glad to have my degree…..the best thing about it like you said is that it’s very flexible and can be applied to almost anything. It’s not the degree name that matters……it’s what you do with it and for a person like me with VARIOUS interests, I can try my hand at a lot of careers and see what works best for me.

um well I’m in a major which is really challenging to me and I have failed a class or two however, I am really interested in getting through this despite my set backs. I don’t only want to do it for myself but also for everyone who doubts me. I’m going into my sophomore year in engineering this fall. Do you think that I should change my major?

  6. acestarone says:

omg i have so many stories from college. my friend who majored in biology failed organic chemistry 3 times but would not change her major (per my advice) bc her mom would not let her. omg she barely graduated and ended up getting a master’s in public health which should have been her concentration in undergrad.

@KristinaArtSeeTV girl i hear y a. i have a good friend who is the most educated tattoo artist / graphic designer i know. she has 2 bachelor’s and a masters. film / fine arts / graphic design.
i know it’s cool to do what you love.
i majored in anthropology and i am getting another degree in entertainment technology. i was almost pressured to be a nurse….(even though that degree is very handy).

wow..This was a great video! Society has a lot to do with why the parents force the kids into majors/careers they don’t want. The parents are many times trying to live their lives through their child ,or in their eyes prevent the child from what they think would be a unprofitable life. The.. “When in Rome do as the Romans do” type of mentality. Your video will help encourage someone to live their true dreams of becoming what they want in life. (:

I originally wanted to major in music and , yes, MY MOTHER discouraged me from pursuing that area of study……I than settled for Psychology, and she was like “Wat u gon do with a degree in Psychology?, nigga please”… And of course since she is a NURSE she tried to convince me that medical professions are the most lucrative and suggested that I major in Biology…..even though I’m TERRIBLE at science and math!

I’m now a Poli Sci jr. and I dont give a damn what she has to say about it.

  15. verballyunspoken says:

PREACH!!!! I am definitely posting this on my facebook! I am sooooooo glad that you made this video. it was long overdue! p.s. I LOVE the glasses..very 80s retro, I love it.

I feel like nothinbutreble should be a guidance counselor for a side job.

  19. LaniceW says:

because of their liberal arts education. People need to stop being so close minded and be more open to a variety of things. It definitely makes no sense for somebody to major in something they have no desire for because their parents don’t believe in a future in whatever they wanted to study. Parents need to realize that it’s not their degree or their life. Students need to realize that it’s their decision and they’re the ones that have to live with it.

  20. LaniceW says:

Everything you said was very relevant to all majors. I just like to add the arts majors as well. I’m talking about music, dance, theater, whatever. Just because people don’t see them using that degree in some sort of stable environment doesn’t mean they can’t make it in the future or use it for other things. There are plenty of black students at my university that have graduated with degrees in something they’re not particularly using in their careers, but they are well-rounded individuals

  21. superiorbandgeek says:

Thank you, and let me throw the music majors in there as well. I get so sick of people making the “starving musician” joke every time I tell them what my major is.

  22. BlaqGurl25 says:

I so agree with you and am elated that you chose to talk about this particular situation. I am a Communications major and I have about a year or so left in college before I obtain my B.A. Now, when I first started school I thought I was just going to school for Journalism but that changed quickly. I found out it wasn’t my purpose. I want to help people, so now at this last stage of my degree I change my minor to Gender Studies and hope to be a Social Worker. People never limit yourself. Thanks!

(Cont) i can now apply all of those lessons and skills to all facets of my life, instead of just having a job. my only regret is that i didn’t do my best nor perform to the best of my potential, so i am now paying the price for that, but if i could do it all over again I WOULD!!! parents need to not just focus on how much money can my baby make with this or that degree and think more about how well rounded their child can become if they loosen up and let the babies major in social sciences!! :)

  24. BigTashia says:

this is a good vid, and i can see where Kandie0101 is coming from but i still think that i support what Tykeia is saying, i wanted to actually go to a Technical school, learn a certain discipline and get a job! my mother was the one who encouraged me to go forth in the 4-year college route so to learn more English, Math, etc. i am so happy i did, i ended up with a BA from a Public Liberal Arts school and love the well-roundedness of education that i got.. (cont)

I know the feeling. When I was a freshman in college I majored in Nursing. My spring of sophomore year I realized that I was going to have a hard time with nursing so I changed my major to Sociology. A lot of my family members asked me what I was going to do with a sociology degree. I guess because my family was so stuck on me becoming a nurse. I think this was a good video :)
